Sarah ALTEMUS Obituary

GLOUCESTER - "And then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with daffodils." Sarah Lavenia "Polly" Dunston Altemus left this earth to dance with daffodils and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in heaven on Monday, Nov. 1, 2010. Polly was a 1939 graduate of Achilles High School, Captain of the Girls Basketball team and princess of the Daffodil Court. As a member of Providence Baptist Church, she was active in several church ministries before the call to continue to serve the Lord by becoming a charter member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church where she was blessed to be the Girls Auxiliary (GA) leader and generously gave in many other areas and activities of the church. Polly was a dedicated homemaker, avid seamstress, needle crafter and tennis player. She was a WWII bride and a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, mother-in-law and friend.
Her parents, John Thomas and Lucy King Dunston; seven sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, William H. "Bill" Altemus Sr.; children, Jean German and husband, Anthony, Jeraldine Young and husband, Andy, William H. "Buddy" Altemus Jr. and wife, Mary, John Altemus and wife Teresa; brother, Harry Lee Dunston and wife, Agnes; grandchildren, Jeff German, Melanie German, Aaron Young and fiancEe, Jennifer Leser, Rebecca Shaw and husband, Adam, Sarah Comer and husband, Cliff, William H. Altemus III, Kimberly Beck and husband, Jason, Melissia Varnadore and husband, Nathan; 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Bud Goude and the Rev. Mike Gray will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at Gloucester Point Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. At other times the family will be receiving friends at the home of John and Teresa Altemus, 6923 Fields Landing Road, Hayes.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Walter Reed Convalescent Center for the loving care given to Polly.
