YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA - Shelby "Jean" Buckner, 75, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014 surrounded by her family. Mrs. Buckner was a native of Rutherfordton, NC and a peninsula resident for 42 years. She retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 2005 after 32 years of service. Jean was the first woman certified to operate a fork lift at Newport News Shipbuilding. She was a loving mother and grandmother and always put her family first. She was preceded in death by her long time companion John Elliott II, her parents, James and Sarah, son Joe Allen, sisters Minnie Wright and Ruby Marlowe, and two grandsons Noah and Chris. She is survived by her daughter Anita Holmes, two sons James Ridings and John Elliott, III (Jo), granddaughter Angela Lewis (Oliver), four great grandchildren Madison and Joshua Lewis, John IV and Elizabeth Elliott, sister Betty Harris (Al), and her beloved cat "Midnight". A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 1st at 4:00 PM at Amory Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Interment will be private.
