Eulogy to Stephen Alan Perok, Sr.
Given at the service on October 24, 2009
On behalf of the family I would to thank everyone for coming. All the love and support you have shown has meant a lot to the family.
I’m here today to talk about the life of Steve Perok (Skeets), husband to Sherry, father to David, Lonnell, Stephen and Jonathan. Grandfather to Jeremy, Troy, David, Krysten, Nicole and Alley. Brother to Larry. I’ve known Steve since I was a little girl when my aunt Sherry would pick me on the weekends to stay with them. I have fond memories of growing up with Lonnell, Stephen and Jonathan. It was always fun to visit Menchville Marina with Steve and play a pinball game or threw a ball to yoyo and coco. I grew up with Steve being an important part of my life.
Steve was very proud of all of his children and grandchildren. I recently went to the beach with Steve, Sherry, Stephen, Jonathan, Jessie, and Alley. I didn’t know at the time how valuable or meaniful that trip would be. Some things that really stood out for me was what a great cook Steve was. Steve could cook seafood better than any restaurant. Steve was just a fun guy and could fit in with anyone anywhere. It was special to see the bond that Stephen and Jonathan had with their father. It was evident the love and respect they had for each other and that they truly enjoyed each others company. Steve also had a wonderful relationship with Jessie and treated her like his daughter. It was great to watch Sherry and Steve with Alley. They are both wonderful grandparents. Steve always had time for Alley no matter how busy he was. Steve and Alley would play Guess Who for hours. Steve was the kind of grandfather every parent would want their child to have. Alley liked to call him Bandaddy.
Steve and Sherry had been married for 31 years. They withstood the true test of time and truly loved each other.
Steve was probably one of the hardest working men I have ever known and also one of the smartest. Steve was like an encyclopedia and could tell you about anything you needed to know. Steve was constantly working on things, buying things, selling things and fixing things. Steve was very talented. Steve also had a large heart and would help anyone. Steve would buy umbrellas at the flea market to give to the homeless when he saw them. In the end Steve donated his organs so he could continue giving.
Our family will be forever changed because Steve was so special to us. At family gatherings you could always count on Steve to play hide and go seek with Alley and Mackenzie, tell a good story, watch an old movie and laugh out loud and then at the end of the day he would be asleep on the couch sometimes snoring. It didn’t matter where we went or what we were eating everyone knew all the food had to be saved for Boomer. We often joked that Boomer ate better than some people. All of that will be greatly missed.
Steve loved and adored his parents. At the end of the day we can take comfort in the fact that he is with his parents now and treasure all of the fond and loving memories we have of him. Thank you for touching all of our lives and allowing us to be part your journey. Steve we love you and you will be forever missed.

To friends and family of Steve Perok: I haven't seen Steve in a very long time. I was his Daily Press paperboy back in the 1960's. One night when I was collecting on my route, Steve invited me in, and shared his love for music by showing me his electric guitar and amplifier and discussed music with me. He saw my interest in music and asked me if I had ever seen a live concert before. I had not. Steve had 3 tickets to a WGH Virginia Beach Dome concert and offered me his son David's ticket. I couldn;t believe it. My parents okay'd the trip and Steve held David in his lap the whole concert so I could have a seat. That concert (The Seeds, ? Mark and the Mysterians and The Outsiders) and Steve's kindness changed my life. I learned to play guitar, played professionally and have been selling musical gear locally as a career for 30 plus years. I'll never forget Steve, for taking the time to share his interest in music with me. It changed my life. May God bless his many friends and family during this time. I'll never forget Steve for making a difference in my life. Many Blessings!

I am so at a loss for words for such a fine man that offered a place to support the working waterman of Virginia. The whole Perok family has offered many years of life to our heritage. He will be deeply missed as much as his dad. Many thanks to them as well as Larry for all they have done for me and for our local waterman over the many years....without them....who knows where some of us might have ended up.

I was very sad this morning when I read about Steve's death. He was a great guy and we had so much fun "back in the good old days". The last time I saw Steve we spent about an hour reminiscing, but mostly he told me about his family. He was so proud of you all and so happy to be a grandfather.. Cherish the memories.

My prayers and faith in the divine spirit of mankind assures me that Steve is smiling from his new home above. Not with pretension but for Steve, a hope in his heart that we, who live on, know that life is only temporary. And that, in which we do here in our borrowed time requires much vigilant in how we treat ourselves and others. Do right here and God will reward us there in Heaven. God Bless You.

I was so sorry to hear today of Skeets' death. He was a childhood/ neighborhood buddy, and along with Larry and the Vickers boys, we shared many a game of 'batters-with' and 'wargames' playing army. We met later in life thru boating at Menchville. He was always so full of fun, and it was my pleasure to have known him. My tho'ts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.

I don't know what to say Papa other than I love you so much and will miss you even more. It’s so hard to even think that you are gone. I still hope that you’ll call me and tell everything is OK or walk through the door and give me one of those hugs where you kiss me on the cheek and never want to let go. You have been such an inspiration to my life and taught me how to be the great man I am today. I am so proud of the life you led and all of the great memories you helped to create, not only with me and the rest of the family, but with pretty much everyone you met. Hearing stories the past few days about your life have been on every range of the emotional scale. Your passion and selflessness has truly impacted everyone. I know you’re watching over me and are here beside me every second of every day. I hope you finally get to take it easy and relax like we have always wanted you to do. Remember Dad, you owe me a hug and I look forward to getting it from you, and brace yourself, it’s going to be a long one. In going over some of the things you had kept, I found an old card that I wrote you when I was just a lil’ guy, it read…”I Will Always Love You Dad Forever, Love Jonny”. It’s true Dad, forever.
Always Papa,
Jonny
