Stephen Zwerner Obituary
Stephen was born in Williamsburg, and was a former resident of Gloucester Point before moving to Culpeper 14 years ago. He was a 1982 graduate of Gloucester High School, and a 1987 graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College. He was a Day Health Rehabilitation Manager with Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board and Area Agency on Aging in Warrenton, Va.
Stephen was preceded in death by his grandparents, Adolph and Marguerite Zwerner, and Willis and Alice Thomas; an aunt, Nancy Fenno; and a cousin, Danny Fenno.
He is survived by his parents, David and Marjorie Zwerner of Gloucester Point, Va.; a son, Hunter S. Zwerner; a stepdaughter, Rachel Minner; two brothers, Tom Zwerner and his wife, Joan of Yorktown and John Zwerner and his wife, Julie of West Point. He is also survived by two nieces, Abigail and Hannah Zwerner; a nephew, Daniel Zwerner; an uncle, John S. Zwerner; and three cousins, Susan F. Morgan and her husband, Troy, Phyllis A. Fenno, and Charles C. Fenno and his wife, Mary.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hunter Zwerner and Rachel Minner Education Fund, c/o John Zwerner, 915 Cherokee Street, West Point, VA 23181.

This not only comes as a shock but I am deeply saddened to know that Steve was living nearby and I never had a chance to reconnect with him. I can remember my two buddies Steve & John in Mrs. Horn's Government class as if it were yesterday -- Trey Young, Jeff Hogge and the Zwerner's. Steve was always a kind, friendly person and I know that when people like Steve are called home at such an young age, that just means that they have served their purpose on Earth and God needs them more than we do. I pray that God will be your strength and your guide in dealing with your loss. Trust in the Lord and in your ways acknowledge Him.

I don't know if you will remember me... but I was in the Class of 83' I first met the Zwerner brothers at GIS... and everytime I see a long sleeve striped rugby shirt, even 30 years later, I think of John and Steve Zwerner! :) I am sorry to hear of Steve's passing. From reading the other postings, I can tell that he grew up to be quite a wonderful person. I lost my Dad at this same time last year... so I know the holidays will be tough for all of you. Lean on the Lord, and he will be your strength. My prayers are with the entire Zwerner family.

I have such wonderful memories of the boys as youngsters playing in our neighborhood. They will always be young boys in my mind. Hey People! I so had the opportunity to meet Steve as my brother to rent from my house. We would joke as his dry sence of humor some times wierded me out. However; I could catch him off guard any day. I come from a big family, and Steve will always be my added Brother. I will miss him forever!

We grew up as quickly as we could together and somehow I seemed to remember details as if time were still. I kept the strength he gave me and the memories of our youth have been told a number of times to make a point or two. I am saddened that we drifted apart but my memories will continue to be passed on to others.

Stephen, as I ponder the events of the past week, my heart goes out to your extensive "Zwerner family " and especially my daughter, Gretchen, my grandson Hunter and my grandaughter Rachel. You were a "GENTIL GIANT" and your kind, loving, gentil ways for all of us will never be forgotten. We will truly miss you. I know you have already earned you wings and will watch over "your family". I'll miss his sneaky ways of picking on me! It takes a rare kind of person to do the work that we do with true compassion. Steve was definitely one of those rare people. My heart goes out to his family, friends, co-workers, and the clients who are missing him dearly.
