Stephen SMITH Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - On Nov. 27, 2009, Stephen Henry Smith Sr., the greatest father and Papa the world has ever known, left this weary world to be reunited in Heaven with his beloved father, Henry Allen Smith, after a long and courageous battle with Prostate Cancer at the age of 61.
Although our hearts hurt because he is gone from our sight, we know that his soul watches over us. We must also smile when we think of the glorious reunion of father and son, and envy him for being the first to hug Henry again.
Dad was born on Jan. 20, 1948. He is a native of Newport News, Va., where he has lived for most of his life. He graduated from Ferguson High School in 1966. After serving our country for four years in the United States Navy, he graduated from Virginia Tech, where he earned a degree in Computer Programming. He then returned to Newport News and worked as a Computer Programmer at Newport News Shipbuilding for the past 33 years.
He is survived by his wife, Rafaela; his mother, Elizabeth Smith; four brothers, David, Michael, Chris and Jerry; two children, Michelle and Stephen Jr.; five grandchildren, Tyler, Makenzie, Josh, Kyndall and Landon; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Steve was such a gentle and giving man. He was wonderful to my elderly mother who used to be his neighbor. He seemed to have only kindness in his heart. There must be a special place in heaven for someone like him. Raffie, I am so sorry about this and I will pray that you and your family gather the strength you'll need to cope with this.

To Steves Family, I know you all know what a wonderful person Steve was but I have to tell you that I met Steve 33 years ago when he came to the shipyard and I must say he was a wonderful friend and co-worker. There was never a time he did not help me when I asked and thru his knowledge I learned a great deal from him. May he rest in peace now and be pain free. Always remember he loved each of you so much and he will continue to look out for you in the years ahead. God Bless you all......

To the family - most especially Raffie...
I only knew Stephen for a very short time, but in that time I saw what a wonderful man he was; a good husband, father, grandfather and, to me, a great neighbor and friend.
Thanks for everything Stephen. You will be missed.

Raffie, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you through this trying time.

To the family,
Steve will be missed and he was a true friend to me and so many of us at the Shipyard. He was my cube mate and we shared many stories about family and friends and of course work. He would always go the extra mile to help a co- worker even when it was not work related. I can truly say that he made me laugh so many times and maybe we had a disagreement a time or two. Steve was the friend you would always want in your corner because you know he would have your back. I will miss him but I know he is at rest now. My prays are with with.

Cynthia Simmons.

I had the honor of meeting and sharing time with Steve through his fine grandson, Tyler, a young talented Disc Golfer. I was always impressed with his devotion to his family and the joy in being with them. He was always helpful, cheerful and kind despite the battle he was fighting. Steve met each day on his terms and was the better man for it. I will think of him at every tournament and miss his laugh and smile. On behalf of our club, I want to let Steve's family know we are there for them and we will miss him dearly as well.

We so enjoyed knowing Steve!

Steve was alway happy go lucky and ready to grab chinese for lunch or sit and talk about anything.

Steve was always quick with a joke or a smile and slow to complain.

We remember him coming to our bonfires and making it feel like we were all a family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones. Steve was a great friend and will be dearly missed.

Hello Raffi and Family,

Steve will always be remembered. I will miss him very much. When I talked to him, he made it very apparent how proud he was of his family. He was also a good friend and an excellent neighbor. My sincerest condolences to all who loved and cherished this wonderful man.
