Suzanne SCULL Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Devoted wife, mother, artist, and homemaker, Suzanne died peacefully at home on Christmas Day, with family at her side after a courageous battle with Leukemia.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Ward R. Scull III; her children, Leah Somers Scull and Ward R. Scull IV (Robbie); her parents, John and Helen Plansoen of Pompton Plains, N.J.; sister, Donna P. Aldom; nephews, Jonathan and Jerrod Aldom, and John W. Scull; and niece, Allyson A. Coffin.
Suzanne was born Sept. 30, 1945, in Pompton Plains, N.J. She was a graduate of Pequannock High School and Marjorie Webster College in Washington, D.C. She taught school in Denton, Md., and art at St. Andrews Episcopal Day School. A devout communicant of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and member of the Community Bible Study, she enjoyed past affiliations with the Junior League of Hampton Roads, Huntington Garden Club, Peninsula Fine Arts Center, and James River Country Club.
All who knew Suzanne were blessed and encouraged by her love, faith, generosity of spirit, energy, and talents. She truly believed and knew that a cheerful heart was good medicine. Her warm smile and keen sense of humor brought laughter and joy to those that she met at home and in her travels. Suzanne's interests included painting, boating, fishing, crabbing, walks on the beach, and gardening. She believed that there was no place closer to heaven than the garden where she seeded, planted, transplanted, and pruned. We praise God for her life and gentle spirit.
The family wishes to thank the faithful and tireless friends and caregivers who made this journey with her. In particular, the family is grateful for the fine medical care of Drs. John Q. A. Mattern II and Elizabeth Harden of Newport News and Drs. John Chute and Angela Johns of the Duke University Adult Bone Marrow Clinic, and their compassionate medical staff.
A memorial and celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials contributions be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 45 Main Street, Newport News, VA 23601; or to a favorite charity. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

To Suzanne's family and relatives...

I was saddened to hear of Suzanne's passing. My sincere condolences and sympathy goes out to all of you. I too, was a high school classmate of Suzanne at Pequannock Township High School located in Pompton Plains, NJ. We were the Class of '63. Suzanne was one of the sweetest and kindest classmates in our class. She was a very warm and sincere person. Suzanne and Ward were both looking forward in attending our 48th high school class reunion in October of 2011. They both were very excited about it. Suzanne will be remembered at the reunion. Suzanne will always be remembered.

Dear Ward,

I was so sorry to learn of the passing of your beloved Suzanne. I met her only once - the night you were honored as the Daily Press Citizen of the Year at the VCIC Humanitarian Awards Dinner - and as ill as she was then, she found the strength to be there to see you shine. The tears in her eyes, and in yours, said everything there was to know about your extraordinary closeness and deep and abiding love for each other. I hope that precious memories of joyful times spent in her company, and knowing that she is safely home, will help ease the loss of one too soon taken.

Wishing you the peace of God that transcends all understanding,

Missy

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
