Vernon OWENS Obituary

HAMPTON - Retired SSGT Vernon J. Owens Sr. passed on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009.
He retired from the U.S. Army in 1971, and also from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding after 23 years of service.
Vernon was a member and former officer of American Legion Post # 1997.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara J. Owens; a daughter, Barbara Hicks; son, Nathan H. McCracken; two granddaughters, Duewa Bevard (Eric), and Eufura Spicer (Steve); five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Juanita Benjamin, and Eddie M. Walker; a brother, Robert Owens (Bertha); and a host of other loving relatives.
Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Nickelson-Cummings Funeral Home, 4304 Victoria Blvd., Hampton. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Albert G. Horton Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, Va.
