HAMPTON - Mrs. Virginia Debnam went to her Heavenly Home on April 16, 2012 at Coliseum Park Nursing Home, Hampton, Va., at 96 years of age.|
She lived in Hampton for the past seven years, having moved here from Bridgeton, N.J., to be near her son, Howard Mason. Mrs. Debnam was a member of Zion Prospect Baptist Church, Yorktown, Va., where the Rev. Walter C. Johnson is minister.
Mrs. Debnam was born in Atlanta, Ga., in July 1915, to Margaret and Zollie Jackson. The family soon relocated to Lenoir, N.C., where she was raised and educated. After her father's death, her mother remarried and gifted the family with a second son, Green Harper Jr.
In 1935, Virginia married Howard L. Mason of Bridgeton, N.J. Their union continued until his untimely death in January 1973.
More than anything, Virginia loved the Lord and her family. She was always ready to teach, preach and sing about God and His glory. Virginia was affiliated with various churches in Bridgeton for many years, and was always willing to assist any church in any way she could. Her favorite pastime was watching Christian television and playing her keyboard (and ordering merchandise from QVC). She will be missed by her many family members and friends, but they will find comfort in knowing that she is resting with her Savior.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Green Harper Sr.; a brother, Hilliard Jackson; her second husband, Lawrence Debnam; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Debnam is survived by two sons, Howard L. Mason Jr. (Dot) of Hampton, Va., and Ronald Mason of Millville, N.J.; five grandchildren, Calvin B. Mason of Tampa, Fla., Sherian Mason Wright (Mark) of Columbia, S.C., Breon Mason of Tampa, Fla., Tyrese Jordan Mason and Jolie Mason of Millville, N.J.; two step great-grandchildren, Chloe and Ariel Wright of Tallahassee, Fla.; one brother, Green Harper Jr. (Bertha) of Bridgeton, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Geneva and Ilene Mason of Bridgeton, N.J.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear, dear friends.
The Mason and Debnam families send a special thanks to her physician/great-nephew, Dr. Phillip M. Dennis, for the personal and professional attention he lovingly gave during her illness. Also, many thanks to the staff at Coliseum Park Nursing Home, C-Wing, for the wonderful care provided while she resided there.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Union Baptist Temple, 30 M. L. King Jr. Way (formerly Willow Street), Bridgeton, N.J., Tel: 856-451-6054, Email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
