NEWPORT NEWS - Lucy Catlett White Robins passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at the age of 88, with husband and family by her side.
She was born in Gloucester County, Va., on March 22 ,1921. Lucy graduated from Hampton High School and attended the College of William and Mary. She was employed at NASA for 28 years and received the National Employee of the Year award. After her retirement in 1979, she began playing tennis and at the age of 62, she started golf. She was an amazing athlete who routinely "shot her age", and scored a 73 when she was 79 and had six hole-in-ones during her golf career.
She was married for 42 years to Peter M. White who died in 1982.
She is survived by her husband of 16 years, John E. Robins Sr.; and children, Judith White, Donald White and his wife, Bettie, and Page Gardner and her husband, Donald; stepchildren, John E. Robins Jr., Judy M. Anderson and husband, Jack, and Susan Long and husband, Robert; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Downtown Hampton. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at St. Johns Episcopal Church by the Rev. Donna Mae Siderius with interment to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
