SCOTTSDALE - Patricia "Ann" Underwood Hicks passed away at Hospice of the Valley-Eckstein Center in Scottsdale, Arizona on October 15, 2013 at 2:55 PM at the age of 64. Ann is predeceased by her father, John Jefferson Underwood, Jr. and her mother, Appolonia "Bob" Staton Underwood. She is survived by her loving husband, Stephen "Steve" Ray Hicks, of 40 years. They were married in Albemarle, North Carolina on July 29, 1973. Ann is lovingly remembered by her son, Justin Alan Hicks, from Cambridge, England; her daughter, Stephanie Ann Mitrovic, from Scottsdale, Arizona; her 9-month old granddaughter, Natalija Mia Mitrovic; her brother, Jeff Underwood, from Nashville, Tennessee; and her sister, Sue Almond from Herndon, Virginia. Ann was born in Albemarle, North Carolina on February 24, 1949. She graduated from Albemarle High School in 1967 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Appalachian State University in 1971 and a Master's Degree from Valdosta State University in 1976. She worked as a special education teacher and Educational Consultant in Hampton and Newport News, Virginia for 32 years. Ann's greatest joy was her family and she especially adored her first and only grandchild, Natalija. She loved the beach and always looked forward to family vacations to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She had a great love of animals and had a special bond with her dog, Kaylee. She enjoyed travel, music and sports. She was a fan of college football and Atlantic Coast Conference basketball. Funeral Services will be conducted at Floris United Methodist Church, Herndon, Virginia. Specific dates and times of the funeral services will be announced at a later date contingent on burial dates provided by Arlington National Cemetery.
