HAMPTON - On January 25th, 2014 at 5pm, God saw a tired soul and dispatched an angel to escort Betty Purcell from this earthly life to eternal rest. Betty was born to the late Hamphan Snowden, known as Sonny, and Mary Johnson, on August 27, 1931 in Carol County, Maryland. She leaves to cherish her memory one devoted son, James McMillan (wife Regina); three loving daughters, Amanda McMillan, Danielle Purcell, and Auyanay Northover (Nay-Nay); two loyal step-daughters, Beth Purcell and Peggy Purcell; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hamilton Snowden (wife Estelle), and Charles Milligan (wife Gloria); one aunt Dorice A. Milligan, who was a majestic figure in Betty's life; two nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by a brother Harry Snowden. She was very well known and loved in the community for her acts of kindness. Betty was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Betty graduated from Mortan High School in 1951 and she went on to teach cosmetology. She owned a beauty salon and was very successful. The family would sincerely like to thank each and everyone for their devotion, prayers and comforting acts of love. A memorial service will be held at 3 PM Friday, January 31, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 512 Buckroe Avenue, Hampton. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
