SMITHFIELD - Shirley Short, 83, a native of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died on Monday, February 10, 2014 in Riverside Regional Medical Center. She was a devout Christian and member of Hilton Baptist Church. Shirley was a southern lady at heart and had an outgoing and bubbly personality, which was evident by her spending time with family and grandchildren over a meal, baking for friends one of her well known chocolate, pineapple or pound cakes, going on social cruises, attending concerts at the town square, and salt water fishing at the beach. She also had a passion for reading and was a N.C. State Wolfpack fan. Shirley was adventurous as well, receiving her pilot's license at the age of 18, making her the youngest to do so in the State of North Carolina. She founded Hayden Lane Historical Association. Survivors include one daughter, Priscilla Osterhouse (Michael); one son, Forrest Short (Jean); one brother, William Terry Draper of Kitty Hawk, NC; three grandchildren, Ainsley, Preston, and Peyton, nephews and niece, William Terry Draper, Jr., Hamilton Brett Draper, and Adrian Nicole Long; and her toy poodle, Clinker. A memorial service will be held at 3 PM Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Hilton Baptist Church with Pastor Lynwood Wells officiating. Burial will be private.
