NEWPORT NEWS - Myrna W. Thompson, 84, affectionately known as "Mimi" to her adoring grandchildren passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 16th, 2014 at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Va. Born and raised in Norfolk, Va., Myrna attended Granby High School where she was a spirited cheerleader for the "Comets". During those years, she met John, who later became her husband of 62 years. Her early love, dedication, and talent for the piano resulted in her being awarded a scholarship to Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. This led to her enduring career as a piano teacher. Her gentle and caring style of teaching spanned 32 years. In addition to her fondness for teaching piano to all ages, Myrna enjoyed dining and laughing with her friends. She looked forward to summer visits to Busch Gardens with her husband and grandchildren; she especially admired the Irish dancers and even rode Apollo's Chariot when 80 years young. She loved to bake -- her pound cake was savored by all, and would have certainly rivaled Julia Child's. She volunteered in Grace United Methodist Church activities that served those in need - she chaired the committee for providing soup and sandwiches to the Salvation Army as well as visiting church members who were shut-ins. Myrna and John were both involved in many other church activities. She took great pleasure in following two of her children's careers in tennis which led to her overall enthusiasm for the game - a passion that never ended. Talking to and hearing about her grandchildren brightened her days. Above all, family and friends were the centerpiece of Myrna's life. Survivors include her husband, John V. Thompson, Jr.; daughter, Leigh Thompson Coss and her husband, Jonathan; two sons, John "Jack" V. Thompson III and his wife, Pam, Lawrence "Larry" Edward Thompson; four grandchildren, Jacque Jensen, Ginny Thompson, Matthew Coss and Sophie Coss; and cousins, Ann Gibson, Kathryn Miko, Randy Gibson, Jessica Leigh Anderson, Dr. William Mcgill and John Woodward. The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 24 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, at 3 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steven Barbery officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 1209 Country Club Rd., Newport News, VA 23606, or a .
