MIchael R. Hatcher Obituary
HAMPTON - On February 19, 2014, Michael R. "Mike" Hatcher passed away after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born at Fortress Monroe, the son of Bertha and Percy Hatcher, he attended St Rose of Lima grade school before going to Hampton High where he played Junior Varsity basketball and worked summers as a lifeguard at Buckroe Beach. He then attended Virginia Tech (VPI) where he graduated in 1963. While at VPI he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Ann Hogge, and they had their first son, Robert, just in time for graduation. The three moved to New Jersey where Mike earned his Master of Science--Statistics degree at Rutgers University in 1966. Bell Laboratory hired Mike while he was a graduate student; he stayed with them for three years, but, wanting to return to the sunny South, he accepted a job with Deering Milliken Textiles in South Carolina. Homesick for Hampton, in 1970 he moved the family back to his roots to take a job with Newport News Shipbuilding. By then there was a second son, Ted, soon to be joined by a daughter, Michele. Being a sports crazy family, Mike led the way by volunteering to coach Wythe Little League Baseball, something he loved as much as his management jobs in Information Technology. He liked to sail with his son Robert, golf with his son Ted, swim with his daughter Michele. Mike was a lifelong Red Sox fan; Ted Williams, whom he met once, was his hero. For reasons best known to them, he and his wife (now deceased) decided to divorce, and Mike went to work for the College of William and Mary. After retiring he liked to travel with his brother Pat on University of California Berkeley Alumni trips that Pat led. Both brothers remembered their mother teaching them to swim and taking them to Virginia Beach to body surf the Atlantic or to go crabbing in Hampton Roads. Mike is survived by his sons, Robert Hatcher of Fort Dix, New Jersey, Ted Hatcher of Chester, Virginia; along with his daughter Michele Hanson of Hampton; brother Patrick Hatcher of Oakland, California; grandchildren Brandon and Nicole Hatcher of Chester; and his former mother-in-law Agnes Hogge of Hampton. The family wishes to thank Mike's fellowship members for their support at the end, especially Bill and Tom. A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM, Monday, March 10, 2014 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton.
