GRAFTON - Deaconess Delores C. Thornton entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. Her life began on September 28, 1934, in York County, Virginia. Deaconess Thornton was a longtime member of Grafton Baptist Church. In 1953, she graduated from York County Training School, which was the last graduating class of that school. After graduating, she attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, pursuing a career in nursing. She completed all of the requirements and received a Certificate in Practical Nursing. She was employed and retired from Eastern State Hospital, as a Psychiatric Aide, after twenty-eight years of dedicated service. She also served as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and had been a member of the Elect Chapter No. 19 for over fifty years. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Deacon Hamilton R. Thornton; her daughter, Donna D. Thornton; her sons, Garland O. Thornton and Hamilet W. Thornton; two sisters; two brothers; eight sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law, nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a plethora of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and many caring friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, (tonight) March 7, 2014, in Grafton Baptist Church, 1301 Old-York-Hampton Highway, Yorktown, VA. A funeral service celebrating the life of Deaconess Delores C. Thornton will be held 12 noon on Saturday, March 8, 2014 in the church, with the Rev. Reginald N. Bagley officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 4933 George Washington Memorial Highway by 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
