NEWPORT NEWS - On Monday, March 10, 2014, God called home Benjamin A. Williams, Jr. He was born in Warren County, North Carolina on February 22, 1932 to the late Benjamin and Annie Williams. He graduated from Hawkins High School then served in the United States' Army. In 1951, he began a career at NN Shipbuilding and worked until his retirement, 42 years later as a supervisor in X32. At an early age he accepted Christ and joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Arcola, NC then later joined Providence Baptist Church, Newport News, VA. Arthur Jr., as he was affectionately known, was united in holy matrimony to Dahlia Harrison on September 25, 1959. He possessed a quiet and peaceful demeanor and was loved by all who knew him. He was a skilled carpenter and electrician who loved gardening, watching sports and news, and spending time with his family. He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 54 years, Dahlia; daughters, Marguerite Johnson, Patsy Norris (Stanley), Chanda Mason (Emmett), all of Hampton, VA, and daughter Harriet Gattison (Kenny) of Goodyear, AZ; 11 grandchildren; sisters, Patsy Gary, Sallie J. Williams, and Rachel Williams; sisters-in-law, Emma Brown and Alyce Nelson; brother-in-law, Frank Harrison (Florence); special nephews, Lawrence, Benjamin, and Charles Williams, special niece, Sallie M. Williams; god-sister, Viola McKay Johnson; special "sons", Gary Vanhook and Thurlow Bailey; and a multitude of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A homegoing celebration will be held 12 noon, Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Providence Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton. Viewing will begin at 1 pm, followed by the family receiving friends from 6-7 pm, Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at the funeral home. Mr. Williams will lie in state two hours prior to the service at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Providence Baptist Church Education Fund.O.H.
