NEWPORT NEWS - Madeline Davis Johnson Merritt was born April 25, 1922 in Turkey, N.C. and had been a Peninsula resident since 1941. God saw fit to call her home on Monday, March 17, 2014, as she was surrounded with family by her side. Madeline was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a devoted member of West Hampton Baptist Church and attended regularly until failing health prevented. Some of her favorite things to do were baking cakes, quilting, and enjoying her beautiful plants and flowers. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, George W. Merritt; parents, Amos D. and Maggie Johnson; brothers, James D. Johnson, George M. Johnson, John Carlos Johnson, and Lloyd Lee Johnson; and sister, Doris Warren. She is survived by her son, Lloyd W. Merritt (Mary Lee Flowers Merritt); daughter, Faye M. Houk (Michael); grandchildren, Kelly Ruth Merritt Vann (Terry), Jason W. Merritt; five great grandchildren, Kala, Alexis, Dajah, Justin and Audrey; two adopted great grandchildren, Grandison and Gommie; brother, Worth Johnson of Longwood, Fla; sisters, Iska Killette and Jewell Taylor of Warsaw, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. A funeral service, officiated by Dr. Danny Owens, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 22, 2014 at West Hampton Baptist Church, 631 Aberdeen Road, Hampton, Va. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 10-11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Our family wishes to extend our grateful appreciation and thanks to Dr. P. Arthur Hoyt for taking excellent care of our mother for many years; also, to Dr. Connito and the entire staff on the fourth floor (MICU) at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
