She served as president of the Northampton Lions Club during 1998-1999, and as a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority. She was a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in downtown Newport News for many years and, more recently, an active member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 57 years, Frank H. Wheless, who attended grades one through twelve with her. She is also survived by daughters M. Paige Maddox, Amy W.
