HAMPTON - Emily Doris Yates, 87, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 23, 2014. She will be remembered always as a very loving, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who will be greatly missed. Born on June 9, 1926 in Bay Springs, MS, she moved to Hampton in 1947 and retired from the Naval Weapons Station in 1988. A longtime faithful member of West Hampton Baptist Church, she served in many capacities to include President of the WMU, a Sunday school teacher, and choir member for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olin E. Yates and by her son, Michael J. Yates of Newport News. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Y. Mundie (Bobby); one grandson, Christopher M. Yates (Ashley Whitney) of Hampton; a great-granddaughter, Grayce E. Yates of White Stone; her nieces, Cynthia A. Dowd (John) of Hampton, Deborah A. Kucerak (Milan) of Jefferson, IA, Vicki Bosz (Gary) of Irvine, CA; and a nephew, Daile Sumrall (Sandy) of Tallahassee, FL. A celebration of life service will be at 11:30 AM, Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at West Hampton Baptist Church officiated by Minister of Music, Larry Smith, and Dr. Danny Owens. A private graveside service will follow. Special appreciation to the nurses and CNA's at St. Francis for her care, and especially to her niece, Cynthia A. Dowd and her husband, John for all their invaluable help and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Southeastern Virginia, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23510 or West Hampton Baptist Church, 631 Aberdeeen Road, Hampton, VA 23661.
