NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA - Marjorie Wyche Pledger Harris, 90, of Newport News, passed away on March 26, 2014. The daughter of Charles Edward Pledger and Ava Harrison Pledger, Mrs. Harris was born July 10, 1923 in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband Carl Ewing Harris and is survived by daughter Dianne Harris Farrar and husband James of Columbus, IN; son Charles Edward (Eddie) Harris and wife Gilda of Beallsville, MD; Ava Harris Sparrer and husband Wendell of Gloucester Point, Virginia Louise Harris Szczypinski and husband Robert of Williamsburg; Kelly Carlaine Harris Burleson and husband Andy of Yorktown, and son Carl Ewing Harris, Jr. and wife Alene of Blacksburg, VA; niece Linda Meyer Cobaugh and husband Lewis of Port Republic, MD; 21 grandchildren, Brian, Bruce, and Gregory Farrar; Keith Callis and Brooke Callis Lucas; Carrie Dickson, Brad and Dale Harris, and Angela Molin; Bernie, David, and Deborah Sparrer; Robbie and Ryan Szczypinski; Carlaine Myers and David, Caroline, and Katherine Burleson; Darren and Michael Price, and Cherylanne Harris; 16 great-grandchildren; and dear friends Mary Bayless of Yorktown, and Bruce and Carol Conway of Newport News. Margie was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed spending time with her family, which she regarded as her greatest treasure. As a U.S. Air Force wife, Mrs. Harris resided in many places around the world before settling in Hampton Roads in 1964. She had a passion for music and singing. She was a local music teacher and church organist, and had been an active member of the Peninsula Organ Club for many years. In recent years, she was a resident of the Arbors of Port Warwick, where she especially enjoyed the Tuesday afternoon Happy Hour Sing-Along. She could always be found in the Arbors dining room at noon with her "lunch bunch." A memorial service will be held at 2 o'clock in the afternoon of Sunday, March 30, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hirschsprungs Disease Gift Fund, c/o Courtney Berrios, John's Hopkins University room 572, Baltimore, MD 21205, in support of her beloved great-grandson Dayton Wells Harris.
