NEWPORT NEWS - Marian Noland Grinnalds passed away April 3, 2014, after a brief illness. Marian was born May 22, 1919, in Baltimore, Maryland, but during her youth she lived in every state on the East Coast while she and her mother traveled with her father, who worked as a plumbing supervisor with the Virginia Engineering Company, building Veterans Administration hospitals between the two world wars. She lived in Miami, Florida at 5, in Maine at age 9, and in Long Island, New York. She lived in Salem, Virginia, and as far west as Ohio. She was back to Florida at 18 to graduate from Pensacola High School. Despite moving to a new school every year of her young life, she maintained an A-B average throughout her matriculation. After graduating from high school, Marian and her family moved to Hampton, Virginia, living on what was then Electric Avenue. While working as a secretary in Noland Company in downtown Newport News, Virginia in 1940, she met Clayton Grinnalds, a Bloxom, Virginia native working as a machinist at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. She married him on February 20, 1943 and they loved and cared for each other for the rest of their lives, until Clayton predeceased her on March 30, 2012. They had two sons, Terry Noland Grinnalds and Neil Byrd Grinnalds, and she is survived by them and Terry's wife, Sue Wills, and her grandson, Ryan Scott Grinnalds. After her sons were grown, Marian worked for some years at Wornom's Arts And Crafts, first in the Warwick Shopping Center and later in the Hilton Shopping Center. She enjoyed her work there, and the opportunity to get out of the house, but without doubt her life's work was her family. She was a loving wife and doting mother, and by her example she showed her sons the value of an inquiring mind, of a love of literature and the arts, and most of all of the importance of having a caring heart. We will miss her always. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2014, at the W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home at 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014, in Peninsula Memorial Park with the Rev. Jennifer Day officiating. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
