HAMPTON - Howard D. Houseknecht, Sr. of Hampton, VA, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Hampton Sentara Careplex. Born November 22, 1941, he had the fortune to grow up around the beautiful New York Finger Lakes in Interlaken, NY, where he liked to deer hunt and play baseball with his many brothers & sisters. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1959 and four years later, met his lifetime love, wife Lorraine Orella. Throughout his USAF career advancing in computer system operations, he was front & center through the evolution of the modern computer, working with the reel-to-reel computing rooms to the complex systems of today. Times over, he, his wife, and three sons were the envy of many to have the fortune of being stationed more than once at Hickam Air Force Base located in Oahu, Hawaii. Retiring as a Master Sergeant after 23 years, he began his second career as a Civil Servant. Working as a Computer Operations Systems Manager at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, he retired after 20 years of service. Howard was an avid golfer & enjoyed heading to the local watering hole meeting his friends to talk sports. He had a knack for picking the right team or driver at the right time but no one ever messed with his NFL Buffalo Bills. He is preceded in rest by parents Harold & Elizabeth Houseknecht; sister, Gloria Hageman and brother, George Houseknecht. He had three sons and two daughter-in-laws, Howard Houseknecht, Jr., Michael Houseknecht and wife, Shalie and Andrew Houseknecht and wife, Leah; four grandchildren, Kylie and Jack (children of Mike and Shalie), Adam & Amber Brown (children of Howard Houseknecht, Jr. and Margret Brown). Surviving siblings are brothers, Earl Houseknecht and wife, Elaine, Scott Houseknecht and wife, Barb, Steve Houseknecht and wife,Tammy; sisters, Sharon Manning and husband, Bill, and Kay Cole. Visitation will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A private interment will be held at a later date.
