NEWPORT NEWS - God called home his great servant man of God, Minister James E. Hurst, after 81 years of labor, to his reward on Saturday, May 10, 2014. He worked for the Newport News Shipbuilding for 40 years. He also worked on lawn mowers but most of all he preached whenever he had a chance. When you dropped your mower off, or when you picked it up he always had a word from the Lord. He was also a faithful member of Full Gospel Worship Center and Associate Minister. He liked to build and make things for the church and family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, three sisters, and three brothers. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hurst, better known as "Momma", as he called her; a sister Ruth Ezzell (Travis) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a brother Robert Hurst (Ninta) of Newport News; his step-children, Peggy Jenkins of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Alvin Moss (Sandy) of Louisburg, NC, Stancil Moss (Silvia) of Louisburg, NC, Ricky Martin (Sandy) of Gaston, NC, Vivian Smith of Gaston, NC; sisters-in-law, Lois Ivey of Apex, NC, and Louise Adkins of Enfield, NC; a step-daughter Debra Craddock and her daughter, Jessica Kite (Jim), better known as "Pumpkin" to him; and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 1 PM on Thursday, May 15, 2014, with a funeral service following at 1 PM at Full Gospel Worship Center, 7010 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, with Pastor Gino Bryant and Pastor Samuel L. Higgs, Jr. of Tabernacle Outreach Ministry, Inc. officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
