POQUOSON - Robert Durward "Dirt" Watkins, Sr., 90, died peacefully Tuesday, June 10, 2014. His beloved wife of over 70 years Margaret Lee and his family were by his side. He was a 1941 graduate of Poquoson High School and served his country during WWII in the USAAC and Korea in the USAF. In his younger years Durward was an avid baseball player and played for Poquoson in the Tri County League. During the 1950's he was instrumental in organizing Poquoson Little League Baseball and Pee Wee organizations in which he also coached. Durward retired as a supervisor after 36 years in the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Poquoson, the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class, Chancel Choir and former member of the George W. Amos Men's Chorus and the United Methodist Men. He loved to work with children and participated in Trinity's Vacation Bible School for 15 years. Durward was preceded in death by his parents Wm Thomas "Tom" and Robena M. Watkins; brothers, Wm Thomas "Bill" Watkins, Jr. and Melvin Lee Watkins and sister-in-law, Dorothy M. "Dot" Watkins. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret Lee Watkins; sons, Robert D. "Bobby" Watkins (Donna), Danny L. Watkins (Cynthia) and Jerry C. Watkins (Donna); daughter Marie W. Hamann (George); sister-in-law, Nancy H. Watkins; grandchildren, Lynn Zimmerman (Craig), Amber Grant (Robert), Dawn Vaughan, Michelle Fitzpatrick (Jarrod), Stephen, Chris and Kellyn Dunn, Laura Watkins, Kelly Faison (Shane), Robbie Delaney (Colette); great grandchildren; Carson Vaughan, Shayne Zimmerman, Kendall Fitzpatrick, Margaret Grant, Jackson Fitzpatrick, Devyn Zimmerman, Virginia "Ginny" Grant, Hunter Fitzpatrick, Lydia Grant, Ayden Dunn, Zoey Delaney and Shannon Faison as well as many other loving relatives and dear friends. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Poquoson with the burial immediately following in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday at Trinity beginning at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1294 Poquoson Ave, Poquoson, VA 23662. Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
