Martha J. Simpson Obituary
TOANO - On Wednesday, June 11, 2014, an Angel appeared before Martha Jane Berkley Simpson and she smiled and took her wings to her Heavenly home. Martha departed this life, in her home surrounded by her loving family. Her life began on December 17, 1925, the daughter of the late Mariah and Charlie Berkley, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. At an early age, she joined St. John Baptist Church, Toano, Virginia. After uniting in Holy Matrimony with the late Willie E. Simpson, she joined hands in fellowship with Chickahominy Baptist Church. She faithfully served her church as a member of the Missionary Board, the Senior Choir and earlier in her life she directed the Junior Choir. She was employed by Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools; retiring as a Culinary Supervisor, after thirty years of dedicated service. She was loved by all and she will be greatly missed. She was also preceded in death by nine of her siblings. She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted and loving children, Willie T. Simpson (Judy), Veronica Wilson (Reggie) and Karen Bartlett (Garrett); her sisters, Mickey Gresham (John), Clara Martin and Emily Martin (Charlie); her fourteen grandchildren; her thirty-two great-grandchildren; her two great-great-grandchildren; her nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of caring friends. A homegoing service, celebrating the life she lived, will be held 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014, in Chickahominy Baptist Church with the Rev. Corwin R. Hammond officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 3346 Chickahominy Road by 12:00 noon on Friday. Mrs. Simpson may be viewed from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, in the funeral home.
