Hettie W. Powers Obituary
NEWPORT NEWS - Hettie Whitley Powers, 90, died Sunday, June 15, 2014, after a brief illness, at The Newport Convalescent Center in Newport News with family at her side. She was born in Lee County, NC on July 4, 1923, grew up in Washington, NC, and had been a peninsula resident for over 66 years. She retired in 1985 after working as a secretary bookkeeper for over forty years. She was a previous member of West Hampton Baptist Church and currently a member of First Baptist Church totaling 66 years. She was a member of the Kings Daughters Sunday School Class and the Joy Quilters. She loved square dancing, cooking, sewing and most of all, quilting and traveling with family and friends. She enjoyed spending time at their river front home on the Pamlico River in Chocowinity, NC and winter months in Florida with her sister, Mavis. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mrs. Powers was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas L. Whitley and Lelia W. Whitley; siblings, Mavis Johnson and Melvin Whitley. Survivors include her husband of 71 1/2 years, Walter Powers; brother, Bill Whitley of Washington, NC; son Walter Connie Powers, III and his wife, Joan, of Newport News; three granddaughters, Deborah P. Costa and Bryan, of Poquoson, Donna P. Wells and Kenny, of Yorktown, Darcey P. Chiappazzi and Joe, of Poquoson; seven great grandchildren whom she dearly adored and loved being their Granny, McKenzie and Matthew Costa, Trevor and Tanner Wells, Margaret, Martha and Joseph Chiappazzi; and many nieces and nephews, including Barbara Barbour. The family would like to extend our appreciation to The Newport Convalescent Center for the excellent care and support given to our family during this time. Special thanks to June Barbrey and nurses, Karen, Michelle, Carrie and staff. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 19, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dennis Adams officiating. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church 12716 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23602. Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
