HAMPTON - Catherine Taylor Barbour entered into eternal rest on June 20, 2014. She was born September 14, 1916 in Maryland. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a long time member of First Baptist Church, King Street, Hampton, Virginia. She enjoyed the churches in the Hampton/Newport News area and supported many of her students while encouraging them to stay in school and further their education. Catherine attended St. Paul's College, Virginia State University and Hampton University where she received a BA Degree in Elementary Education and a MA Degree in Guidance and Counseling. She held professional positions at Thomas Eaton Junior High School, Y. H. Thomas Junior High School, Spratley Junior High School, and George Wythe Elementary School. She worked 30 plus years in the Hampton City Schools. In addition, she was a life long member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She pledged in Newport News, Virginia when there was one chapter in the area that served both Newport News and Hampton. She was a charter member of the Hampton Alumnae Chapter and served on many committees. She was the first Coordinator of the Teen Lift Program, Scholarship Chair, and the Patronesses, Delta Woman of the Year and also served as President of the Hampton Alumnae Chapter. She was the devoted wife of the late Lawrence P. Barbour, a long time Civil Rights Activist and the only Black CPA in the area, for many, many years. Catherine was a frequent advisor, counselor and role model for teachers, parents and students. She guided and assisted many relatives, friends and others in the community. She is survived by a brother, Mr. Reynolds Taylor (Rita) of Maryland; one cousin, Velma Cannon of New York; and her caretaker, Alfreda Elizabeth White and other relatives and close friends. Her Celebration of Life Service (Funeral) will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church, 229 North King Street, Hampton, Virginia. Her interment will be held immediately after the church service at the Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be held at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 12:00 noon until 6:00 PM. The Omega Omega Service of the Hampton Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Sorority, Inc will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 6:30 PM. Arrangements by Ronald C.
