WILLIAMSBURG - Born in Wilmington, Delaware on June 10, 1922 to Paul Winfield Starr and Elizabeth Caroline (Hoffman) Starr, Gene Lair (Starr) Singley died peacefully in her sleep with her children at her side, at home in Williamsburg, Virginia on June 21, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, and four of her seven sisters, Mrs. Ruth Smith; Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson; Mrs. Evelyn Worley; and Mrs. Marjorie Marsh. Gene is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Doris Hanby of Newark, Delaware; Mrs. Shirley Morgan of Newark, Delaware; and Mrs. Dorothy Mearns of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Gene had no brothers. Gene was married to her P.S. DuPont High School sweetheart, George Townsend Singley Jr. (LTC USA-Ret.) for 69 years at the time of his passing in 2012. They are survived by their five children: George T. Singley III of Fairfax Station, Virginia, married to the former Sadie Maxine Verlander; Deborah Lee Singley Brown of Poquoson, Virginia, married to Robert Russell Brown Sr.; Robert James Singley of Bena, Virginia, married to the former Angela Lynne Allgood; Barbara Jean Singley Haak of Toano, Virginia married to Roger Martin Haak; and Jeanne Elizabeth Singley Hull of Hanover, Virginia, married to Brian David Hull. For nearly 50 years, she was a member of the Cooch's Bridge (Delaware) Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Woman's Club of Williamsburg. A descendent of English Quaker 17th century immigrants, she came from a long line of teachers and accountants. Always a lady, she imbued in her children self-reliance, family values, and love of God and country. She was an exceptional homemaker, a gourmet cook, expert seamstress and superb quilter. Gene was much loved and respected. A funeral service for Gene will be held at the Walnut Hills Baptist Church, 1014 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, Virginia at 11:00 AM on June 30, 2014. A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
