NEWPORT NEWS - Sidney L. Bynum, 94, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Born in Lincolnton, NC on July 12, 1920, he was a long time resident of Newport News. He was a WWII U. S. Merchant Marine veteran, serving both Pacific and Atlantic areas. Sidney was a retired 30 year employee of Newport News Shipbuilding. In his spare time he enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He loved to garden in his backyard where he grew the best tomatoes and always had a pet chicken. He loved to watch the hummingbirds in Suffolk at his daughter's farm. He was the beloved husband to the late Ina Bynum and beloved father of Mary Christina Bailey (Mike), Sharon Kaye Glaser (Denny), and the late Sarah Regina Eley (Dave); grandfather of Dennis Glaser, Jr., Mikey Bailey, Sidney Bailey, Heather Glaser Lockett (Joey), Regina Glaser and Michelle Eley Coffey (Aaron). Other survivors include his brothers, Homer Bynum, Meredith Bynum; and sister Jewell Kerr. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home with Pastor Don Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P. O.
