Eugene North Jr. Obituary
HAMPTON - Eugene North Jr., 54, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father Eugene North, Sr., step-mother Annie North, step-mother Patricia Ann McConnell and uncle Richard North. Gene was born November 8, 1959 in Dayton, Ohio. He attended Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia and joined the United States Army in 1978 where he achieved Staff Seargent rank and was a tank commander. He worked for the US Postal Service for more than 13 years as a mail carrier and also worked for Stephens Builders, Joe Gaita Contracting and Chesapeake Masonry in most recent years. Gene's passion was largemouth bass fishing. He was a founder of the Bootlegg tournament trail (now known as the Suffolk Singles Doubles.) He earned countless trophies, plaques and recognition during his years of fishing and in 1994 he won a spot in the Big Bass World Championship in Florida. As Gene said, "fishing was my one chance to shine." Gene was also a pit crew member in the Hooter's ProCup racing series with driver and longtime friend Joe Gaita. He loved music and sang in a local garage band with friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a true storyteller; he always gathered an audience as he recounted stories and memories. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved daughter Lindsey O'Dorisio (Daniel) and adoring granddaughters Abigail and Madelyn, loving Mother Elfriede Couch, his devoted siblings, sister Terry Shackelford (Dan) and brothers Gary, Ricky, Sam (Lisa) and nieces and nephews Amanda, Jason, Heather, Jake, Cole and Hunter and great niece and nephew Olivia and Thomas. The family will celebrate Gene's life with a visitation Tuesday August 12th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and service Wednesday August 13th at 2 p.m. officiated by Pastor Prescott Belt at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News. Burial with military honors will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens with a reception to follow. Memorial donations may be made to Lynch Syndrome International, 3650 South Pointe Circle 205-9, Laughlin, Nevada 89029.
