Aubrey E. Sadler II Obituary
VIRGINIA BEACH - Anything you wanted to learn about Virginia history, Thomas Jefferson or how prestressed concrete extends support of bridges and stadiums, you only had to ask Aubrey Edward Sadler II, who passed away on August 21, 2014, in Virginia Beach, Virginia at the age of 81. Aubrey moved through life with his own brand of unhurried intention, calm and reassuring nature, generosity, and grace. Sitting down with Aubrey for a meal or a conversation required patience that was always rewarded. We all loved Aubrey for his attention to detail in every aspect of his life including his love, care and support of his family, his meticulous penmanship, and a successful career as a structural engineer. Aubrey wrote daily in his journal and had a great passion for observation, listening and individualism. He loved to travel and after retirement found adventure and friends via Road Scholar/Elderhostel where he would zip line through the Blue Ridge Mountains and kayak the lochs of Scotland. Aubrey was born on September 18, 1932 in Bishop, a small coal mining community in the beautiful mountains of southwestern Virginia. He was the eldest child of the late Freda Cassell Sadler and Aubrey Edward Sadler. Aubrey is survived by his beloved companion Ruth Laren of Virginia Beach; sons Aubrey of Norfolk, VA, Evan of Seattle, WA; Alex (and his wife Bonny) of Alexandria, VA; mother of his sons Becky Sadler of Leesburg, VA; four granddaughters Courtney, Sydney, Alison and Madelyn; his younger brother and sister-in-law Allan and Barbara Sadler of Virginia Beach; his "baby sister" Arden S. Washburn of Newport News, VA; several nieces and nephews. A graduate of Pocahontas High School, Aubrey attended Virginia Tech and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering in 1954. After serving two years as an officer in the US Army Corps of Engineers, he returned to Virginia Tech and received a Master of Science degree in Architectural Engineering in 1959. Aubrey began his career as a structural engineer at Southern Materials of Norfolk, Thomas Hanson and Associates of Richmond, and Fraioli-Blum-Yesselman Associates of Norfolk. He joined LANTDIV Atlantic Division (Naval Facilities Engineering Command) at the U.S. Naval Station in Norfolk. Aubrey served in the Structural Engineering and Cost Estimating branches where he retired as Branch Manager in 1999. A celebration of Aubrey's life will be conducted at 11 am on Monday, August 25, 2014, at the chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 2002 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach with Pastor Amanda Webber of Great Bridge United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 PM on Sunday August 24 at the chapel of H.D. Oliver. Memorial donations may be made to the , The Virginia Historical Society or Road Scholar. Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.
