YORKTOWN - Wilma Sue Eversole Meland, 74, lost her eight-year courageous battle with breast cancer on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 in Yorktown, Va.|
She was born in Buckhorn, Ky., in 1935. She rose up from meager beginnings to be a manager at Citizen's Fidelity Bank in Louisville, Ky., where she retired in 1990. Her life is a story of perseverance, survival and love. She persevered through a difficult childhood, where she was left to raise her siblings at a very young age. She survived many other obstacles while raising three sons and a stepson, all of whom she loved unconditionally. She ensured that they had opportunities that she didn't have growing up. She loved each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and took the time to make each feel especially loved.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, Harlan and Mary Eversole; her first husband, Harold W. Meland; second husband, Thomas M. Shumate; her sisters, Gladys Mockbee, and Eula Sizemore; her brother, Joseph Eversole; and her stepson, Ronald W. Meland.
She is survived by three sons, David R. Meland and his wife, Nancy of Georgetown, Ind., Gregory W. Meland and his wife, Donna of Yorktown, Va., Britton E. Meland and his wife, Christina of Oceanside, Calif.; a brother, Doug Eversole and his wife, Brenda; and a sister, Thelma Cooke and her husband, Monroe, all of Louisville, Ky.. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Michelle Watson, Casey Hornung, Hollee Abney, Shawn Meland, Nikki Meland, Ashley Lea, Wesley Meland, Austin Meland, Rachel Hartmann, Amber Gauthier, Erik Meland, Heather Meland, Ollie Meland, Harlan Meland; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, with the Rev. Connie Gibbs officiating. Interment will be in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Ky.
