Obituary Condolences

NEWPORT NEWS - Richard E. Downey, 81, passed away on Memorial Day, May 31, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family. A native of Indiana, Pa., he had been a Virginia resident for 47 years.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a MSGT in 1970 after 22 years of service. His career included serving in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. He received several citations including the Bronze Star.
Other interests and hobbies included bowling, golf, fishing, and playing all types of logic games.
He was a friend to animals, domestic and wild alike.
Preceding him in rest are his father, Homer Downey and mother, Myrtle Myers; brother, David Downey.
Surviving members of his family include his wife of 53 years, Olga M. Downey; daughters, Margit Downey, Ramona M. Howard and husband, James; brother, William Downey; sister, Ramona Cribbs; and nieces and nephews.
A graveside service celebrating Richard's life will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, June 3, 2010, at Hampton – Veterans Memorial Gardens with military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to the , Animal Aid Society in Hampton, or their favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
