GLOUCESTER - Carl Richard Morris, born July 6, 1923, in Rocky Mount, N.C., known to family and close friends as Buster, died peacefully in his home with his family and his beloved cat, Clara, by his side on Jan. 17, 2011.
Carl graduated from Rocky Mount High School in 1941 and also completed an apprenticeship at the Newport News Shipyard in July 1942.
Carl married Geraldine (Gerry) Whitfield, also of Rocky Mount, in 1944 and was married to her until her death in January 1996.
He served in the Navy during WWII aboard the battleship USS IOWA from 1944 through 1946. After returning from war, he worked as a machinist at the Newport News Shipyard. Following the shipyard, he attended VPI and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, Carl taught for seven years in the Hampton City Schools. In 1955, he opened the new Poquoson Elementary School and was principal until 1963. In June 1962, he completed his Masters in Education at the college of William and Mary. Carl and his family moved to Woodbridge, Va., in 1963 and he opened Marumsco Hills Elementary School, serving as principal until his retirement in 1978 when he and Gerry moved to Gloucester.
He enjoyed his family, fishing, boating, vegetable gardening, camping with his family and music. His particular love of music included playing the saxophone and piano. He left the legacy of the love of music to his daughters, granddaughters and great grandchildren. He was a member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church and was a member of the choir and served as a deacon for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Skid and Minnie Morris of Hampton; his wife of 51 years, Gerry Morris; his brother-in-law, Bill Wiggs; and sister-in-law, Delores Morris.
He is survived by wife, Shirley Morris; three daughters, Cindy Morris and husband, Artie of Iron Gate, Va., Carol Clark and husband, Edward of Fairfax, Va., Cathie Elliott and husband John of Fairfax, Va.; two granddaughters, Laura Roberts and husband, Richard of Sharon, Pa., Leslie Maione and husband, Michael of Endicott, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren, Sam and Maddison Maione, Natalie and Caroline Roberts; sister, Elaine Wiggs of Poquoson, Va.; brother, Odell Morris of Florida; three stepdaughters, Carol Traverse and husband, Tom of Charleston, S.C., Jo Dudley and husband, Carter of Richmond, Va., Melanie Miles and husband, Douglas of Mathews, Va.; three stepsons and numerous stepgrandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Ray Goude Jr., the Rev. Dr. Paul Garber and the Rev. Richard Roberts will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, at Gloucester Point Baptist Church. Interment with military honors will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
