HAMPTON - Lt. Col. Thomas Haldane Brown, U.S. Air Force retired, age 89, died Aug. 11, 2011.

Born in New York City, he had been a Hampton resident since 1961, where he volunteered many hours of community service after his retirement. Lt. Col. Brown retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1967, after 25 years, flying C-46's over "the Hump" in India during WWII and B-26's during the Korean War. He was awarded four Air Medals, two Distinguished Flying Cross Medals and the Army Commendation Medal. Lt. Col. Brown was a member of the Hump Pilots Association, American Legion Post #31, V.F.W. Post 14000, Retired Officers Association, Virginia Retired Officers Association, and the Hampton Kiwanis Club.
Lt. Col. Brown was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Brown.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth McDonough Bohannon of Atlanta, Ga.; his sons, Thomas H. Brown Jr. of Dahlonega, Ga., and Robert Walton Brown of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, by the Rev. Peggy Buelow. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.
The family wishes expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 2605 Cunningham Dr., Hampton, VA 23666.
