NEWPORT NEWS - Lilibel Totty Carlovitz Spearman, born in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 24, 1925, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011.|
Her family resided in Auburn, Ala., where she graduated from Lee County High School and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University). She was married to Morris Leroy Spearman on Sept. 4, 1944.
While living in Hampton, Va., Mrs. Spearman was a stenographer in the Editorial Office at NACA from 1945-1949. For several years, the Spearman family participated in a Foster Parents program. Mrs. Spearman later assisted in the founding of LINK and other community service organizations. She sang with Sounds of Joy, a group of church women, as well as singing in church choirs for more than 40 years. Mrs. Spearman was a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church where she shared her love of the Lord with many.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Michael Spearman and his wife, Mary; two daughters, Judianne Heath and Karlene Spearman; five grandchildren, April Wood, Christopher Spearman, Brian Spearman, Robert Heath, Michael Heath; 10 great-grandchildren, Alison, Christian, Logan, Copeland, Riley, Haley, Kyle, Brittany, Zachary and Kayleigh; and one sister, Beth Holtam.
A devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, she was one of God's greatest creations.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private in Peninsula Memorial Park.
