Shirley ANDERSON Obituary
NEWPORT NEWS - Shirley Anderson passed peacefully at home on Friday June 1, 2012.
Shirley was born Feb. 14, 1937, in Bishopville, S.C., to the late Rebecca and John Wilson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John Wilson Jr., and Fred Wilson; son, Derick Hargrove; and best friend, Barbara Wynn.
Shirley was a graduate of Huntington High School (1956) and Peninsula Business College (1958). Shirley retired from the Newport News School System, as a security officer, and was the first black to be hired by the Manchester, New Hampshire Police Department. She was also a Past Worthy Matron of Midlothian Chapter #92 OES-PHA. Shirley enjoyed working in her yard, growing flowers, decorating her home and singing in her church choir.
She is survived by sons, Lorenzo (Ruth), Anthony, Renaldo (Lisa), and Dearyl (Daphne) Anderson; sister, Dr. Barbara Farmer (Dr. Edgar Farmer); brothers, Richard Wilson (Anna) and Woodrow Wilson (Priscilla); 15 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
A homegoing service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at First United Baptist Church on Roanoke Ave., in Newport News, with interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Newport News, Va. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Nickelson-Cummings Funeral Home.
