NEWPORT NEWS - Edward George Bimler, 83, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Aug. 11, 2012, after a long battle with brain trauma.
Ed was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Lansford, Pa.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1946 at the age of 17. He served in Korea as the youngest first sergeant in the Far East Air Forces, as-well-as two tours in occupied Japan. Ed was honorably discharged in 1958 with a medical disability due to tuberculosis. He received numerous medals to include: Good Conduct Medal (1 clasp), War World II Victory Medal, Japanese Occupation Medal, Korean Services Medal (5 Bronze Stars), UN Service Medal and a ROK President Unit Citation Commendation Ribbon. Ed remained a good friend to his service brothers and coordinated the yearly reunions across the United States to meet them and remember the "good times" of the 1503rd Supply Squadron.
Ed completed graduate studies in 1963 at Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., and became resident auditor with the USAF Auditor General in Pittsburgh, Pa. Ed moved to Newport News, Va., in 1976 and began a 20 year career as an auditor with DCAA at Newport News Shipbuilding and the Langley branch office. During this time he became a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and a metal detecting enthusiast, a hobby he shared with his wife Raelene. After retiring, Ed worked for 12 years for Science and Technology Corporation in Hampton before finally deciding that he wanted more time to enjoy reading, the writing of history and…working with bricks, those lovely bricks.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Paul S. and Katherine Bimler (Kissner), of Lanford, Pa.; his wife, Raelene Hurley Bimler, of Jim Thorpe, Pa.; and two brothers, Paul J. Bimler, of Hometown, Pa., and Daniel K Bimler, of Sharon Hill, Pa.
Ed leaves behind his wonderful children who will cherish the memory of hearing their dad sing old Army songs, Keith E. Bimler and wife Kim, of Fort Mills, S.C., John A. Bimler and wife Terry, of Newport News, Va., Renee A. Ito and husband Mark, of Newport News, Va., Lisa Bimler Nuckols, of Yorktown, Va., Edward (Ted) M. Bimler and wife Barb, of Weedville, Pa., Kurt R. Bimler, of Newport News, Va., Gayle L. Bimler and Dave, of Hampton, Va.; his beautiful grandchildren, Erin, Anna, John Alan, Shane, Ashley, Amanda, Erik, Ethan and four precious great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles F. Bimler and wife Noemi, of San Antonio, Texas, Joseph (Richie) Bimler and wife Patricia, of Lewis Center, Ohio.
The Bimler family children would like to express their deepest gratitude for all those that supported Ed during the past several years: Riverside Hampton Pace and the day room nursing staff, Griswold Home Care and Direct Home Care. Special thanks to Dr. Evans and all the Aides that have sat and held our dad's hand and gazed in his beautiful blue eyes and encouraged him day-after-day.
Dad will be missed by many and those that had the opportunity to meet and get to know him, know that they are blessed.
Rest peacefully Dad, we love you.
The family will receive friends at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Mass will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will take place in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
