George EARMAN Obituary

TOANO - George McNeil Earman, 87, of Toano, Va., died in Chicago, Ill., on Oct.16 2012, of complications of his second stroke.
He was born in Rockingham County to Ollie Armentrout and George Whitfield Earman. The family traveled all over the mountains of Virginia, because his father was superintendent of Prison Camp #20, that built the roads in that part of the state. He graduated from Broadway High School in Broadway, Va. During WWII, he was drafted into the army and served as a clerk in an Air Force supply warehouse near Ispwich, England, where he attained the rank of sergeant. After the war, he returned home and graduated with a BS in Business Administration from Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU, where he met his wife. He taught school for two years in Monterey, Va., before moving to Toano, where he held the job of clerk at Eastern State Hospital, Toano Post Office, James City County Social Services, and Sheldon Lumber Company. He was also a landlord. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
George was a devoted family man who enjoyed a turn of phrase, a tall tale and an amusing anecdote. He was a patron of the arts and an animal lover.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Stella Mead Earman; his daughter, Maria Earman Stetter, Ph.D.; his grandson, George Edgar Stetter; his son-in-law, Tom Stetter; his niece, Eileen Branch; his lifelong friends, Ann Blanton, Ph.D. and Sam Hasler. He will be missed by extended friends and family for his enjoyment of life and unusual sense of humor.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Oct. 27, at Lakeview Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Ill.; and at 10 a.m., Nov. 3, at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Toano, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 7801 Church Lane, Toano, VA 23168; or the American Stroke Association. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. During this time, it's comforting to read God's Word, thw bible at Psalms 55:22. There, we are told to throw our burden upon God and he will sustain us. He will help you to deal with your loss and provide you with the comfort your need.

Stella and Maria,
I am sorry for your loss--I know you will miss George greatly. I enjoyed working with George at Sheldon Lumber and remember the many times we laughed about something silly or some thing only George and I thought was funny. George was a dear and kind man and I am glad that he was a part of my life.

I'm so sorry to hear George has passed away. He and Stella were the most wonderful landlords you could imagine. He was always just a phone call away if I needed help and he and Stella called often to check on me when I was going through some sad times of my own. I'm sure he will be entertaining the angels from now on. My sincerest condolences to Stella, Maria and Tom and little George.

Celebrating George....That he was a wonderful husband....a loving father....had a wonderfully dry sense of humour...was refreshingly himself.....cared about people...gave them nicknames...multiple ones at that...was curious and well read...Maria, I cherish all those childhood growing up memories..George driving us to see the Christmas lights......Much love and sympathy to you, Stella and family.

George was always listening to my tales of china and he asked great questions to let me expound more. I appreciated his humor too, even though I didn't always understand his jokes. He will be missed by our family.

I met George a couple of times as I am a friend of his daughter, Maria. I also have heard stories about George from Maria over the years about his wonderful sense of humor and wit. George was such a wonderful and loving father to Maria and I have always admired their close relationship. All our love to now Maria.

George, did I ever tell you that you're a handsome man? As sad as I am that you had to leave us, I'm happy for your new journey. Tell Ollie "hi". What a fantastic life you had!! I love you, George. God speed! And may He wrap his loving arms around your family, and your friends left behind.
