HAMPTON - Charles Andrew Gwaltney, age 82, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, after a short illness.|
He was born on Jan. 29, 1930, in Smithfield, Va., son of the late Nicolas O. and Louise M. Gwaltney.
Charles was a loving and devoted family man. He was so proud of his family especially his grandchildren. He was a friend to everyone and was a member of Restoration Phoebus Baptist Church.
He worked for the C&O Railroad for more than 30 years and retired as tugboat captain; he also retired from VDOT as a Jamestown Scotland Ferry captain. He was proud to be an Army veteran.
Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine; brother, Nicolas Gwaltney III; sister, Helen Manley; son, Donald Gwaltney.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 24 years, Myrtle W. Gwaltney; two brothers, William Gwaltney and wife Glenda of Chattanooga, Tenn., Algie Barrett and wife Marie of Suffolk, Va.; two sisters, Hilda Ballew of Hampton, Va., and Susie Wright and husband Robert of Wichita Falls, Texas; two daughters, Catherine Wendland and husband James of Wasilla, Alaska, Mary Fortner and husband Michael of Newport News, Va.; four stepchildren, Ronald Prather, Wanita Kelly, Leo Prather and Alton Yates; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Parklawn- Wood Funeral Home. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov.1, 2012; interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
