NEWPORT NEWS - Dr. William Harry Woessner, age 51, died peacefully at home on Oct. 30, 2012.|
He was the son of Alberta Buch Woessner and the late Harry Norman Woessner. Born on March 28, 1961, at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Bill was a lifelong resident of Virginia. He began his education at Hidenwood Elementary School in Newport News, and graduated Ferguson High School in Newport News, in 1979. He received his bachelor's degree in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1983. Following college, Bill studied medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Riverside Hospital. He has been in private practice for 20 years, mostly in Newport News, except for five years in solo practice at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, Va. He was most recently employed by Riverside Medical Group, practicing at Women's Healthcare. He will be remembered by his colleagues and patients for his kindness and compassion.
Bill loved travelling with his family and especially loved the beach and being near the water, where he was an avid boater and fisherman. He loved music, and he was the lead singer and guitarist of the Heartache band and played at weddings and parties for many family members and friends. More recently, he played with the guitar group at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, where he was a member.
Above all, Bill was a loving husband to his wife of 19 years, Elizabeth Mayes Woessner and a devoted father to his children, Meredith and Benjamin. He most enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He will be especially remembered for his commitment to his family, his unfailing cheerfulness, his enjoyment of adventure, his honesty, his generosity, and his fortitude.
In addition to his wife, children, and mother, he is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Linda Woessner of Ft. Worth, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Pamela and John Maser of Newport News; nieces and nephews, Phillip (Sarah), Laura, and Thomas Woessner, John (Stephanie), Chris, Sarah, Andrew, and David Maser, and many other special relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kim Schlesinger, Shannon Waldroup, R.N., and the entire staff of Peninsula Cancer Institute, for their compassionate care.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Nov. 2, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, 414 Hiden Blvd., Newport News, Va. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
