HAMPTON - Hillmer John "Swede" Olson, of Hampton, died Nov. 22, 2012.|
Swede was born in Allentown, Pa., to Hillmer and Myrtle Olson on May 9, 1932.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 35 years, Peggy Lawson Olson, and a sister, Carol Beltz.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Evans Olson; sons, Jerry Lawson Olson (Stacy Queensberry), John Hillmer Olson (Shannon); grandsons, Lawson, Jack, William and August Olson; stepson, Norwood Evans (Michele) and sons, Christopher and Brian; sisters, Janice Harleman, Linda Moyer (Butch); brother, John (Maryann); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Swede graduated from Lansford High School, Lansford, Pa., in 1950 and VA Tech in 1957. He served in the United States Air Force. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1957 where he played linebacker. He returned to Virginia and married the late Peggy Lawson. He owned and managed Lawson Seafood Co.
He was a member of Elks, Lodge 366, Hampton Yacht Club, Hampton Roads Assembly and St. John's Church.
Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at St John's Episcopal Church, Hampton. The family will receive friends after the service at a reception in the parish hall.
