HAMPTON - Claude Best entered eternal rest on January 22, 2013. A native of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, he was born in the County of Edgecombe on November 10, 1931 to the late John and Mary Best. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Johnny Best, Olivia Cole, Hattie Hailey and Naomi Gooch. Claude was educated in the Public Schools in Rocky Mount and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School where he lettered in Varsity Football. After graduation he matriculated at North Carolina A & T University before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Upon returning from the Air Force, he resumed for a livelihood his first love, Brick Masonry. He was a Master Brick Layer and his craftsmanship is on some of the finest homes on the Peninsula including Kings Mills in Williamsburg and those of family and friends. He retired after working over 40 years in 1994. He was an avid news junkie and enjoyed reading the paper and watching the news daily. Throughout his life he was a well- versed and informed conversationalist and could talk about subjects ranging from history to science to politics.Until his health precluded him, Claude attended Faith Baptist Church and professed Jesus Christ to be his Lord and Savior. He is survived by a rich legacy of loving family members; his wife of 55 years Margaret, four sons, Tyrome (Valerie), Dwight, Timothy, and Reginald (Nicole), four daughters, Deborah (Gerald), Eleanor Jean ,Terri and Darlene, daughter\granddaughter, Melissa Best, niece\daughter Audrey Cole, god daughters, Joann White (Gary) and Chandra Eley (Vershawn) of Elizabeth City, NC, eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, his foster brother William (Bill) Lewis (Rose), Pontiac MI, Uncles Joseph Jones (Mary) and Joshua Jones of Virginia Beach, Aunt Ethel Miller ( Rev. James) of Brooklyn, New York, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. A viewing will be held Friday, Jan. 25 from 12:00 to 7:00 pm at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be held 12:00 Sat. Jan. 26, 2013 at Faith Baptist Church 3309 Madison Ave. NN.
