HAMPTON - Warren S. Dronen, 90, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Warren was born on December 4, 1922 in Sharon, North Dakota to the late Hans M. and Ragna Dronen. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Betty J. Dronen; sister, Beulah Wright; two sons, Michael W. Dronen (Joni) and Gary D. Dronen (Cheryl); and four wonderful grandchildren. Warren spent over 36years in the military serving the country he dearly loved. A veteran of 3 wars, he began his military career with the Army Air Corps in 1941 as a P-47 and P-51 fighter pilot flying combat missions during World War II. After multiple assignments state-side and overseas, Warren completed his active duty service at Tactical Air Command Headquarters, Langley AFB in May 1977. He was a graduate of the Colorado School of Mines with a BS degree in Petroleum Refining and MS degrees from the Air Force Institute of Technology and Boston University in Engineering Technology and Education. Following his military service, Warren began a second career as a dedicated volunteer to his community, and a strong ambassador for his faith in God. Maintaining close ties with the military, Warren spent many hours of volunteer time at the Hampton VA Medical Center, and Langley AFB Hospital and Dental Clinic. He particularly enjoyed his time spent mentoring young teens and reading to the handicapped for "The Voice of the Peninsula." His considerable military and aviation experience served him well during his volunteer time as a docent at the Virginia Air and Space Museum, and Hampton Air Power Park. A dedicated member of the Bible Study Fellowship, Warren particularly enjoyed the close friendships established with fellow members while studying and sharing the Lord's word. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 10, 2013 from 4-5:30 PM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, March 11 at the Langley AFB Main Chapel. Burial with full military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
