Gaynelle Shelton Pullen Obituary
Gaynelle Shelton Pullen entered the Kingdom of Heaven Monday, May 6, 2013 at Loudoun Inova Hospital in Leesburg, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ferdinand and Hattie Shelton, her older brother McGlenard, and her husband Lawrence Gaylord Pullen. She is survived by her younger sister Doris Jarvis, four nieces, Gaynelle Cassandra, Cherise Michele, Sylvia Shelton Pressley and Diane Shelton Brown; her son Kevin, his wife Helen, and her granddaughter Virginia-Ann Gaynelle, and numerous friends who loved her dearly. Mrs. Pullen was born in Lynchburg, VA on June 14, 1925. With an interest in teaching and education, Mrs. Pullen graduated from Bluefield State Teachers College, in Bluefield, WV, with a Bachelors of Science in education. While at Bluefield State, she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, in which she remained active throughout her life. Mrs. Pullen continued her studies at Pennsylvania State University, where she received a Masters of Science in Education. Using these degrees, she returned to Lynchburg and began a long career in education, primarily as an elementary school teacher, in the Lynchburg Public School System from which she retired Mrs. Pullen was a long-time active member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church congregation, serving many faithful years as church clerk. She enjoyed travelling and spoke fondly of some of the many trips she took. The family will receive friends 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., today, Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory, 427 Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, and other times at the home of Miss Joyce. An Alpha Kappa Alpha Ivy's Beyond the Wall service will be held 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2013 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 5912 Igloe Drive, Lynchburg, VA, and a full funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 11, 2013, again at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Entombment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Gamma Iota Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Scholarship Fund. P.O. Box 11842, Lynchburg, VA 24505.
