NEWPORT NEWS - Marion W. Rawls, 88, of Newport News passed from this world on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Marion was born and raised in Arapahoe, NC, where he played on the school basketball team and graduated valedictorian of Arapahoe High School. Joining the US Army in 1944, he served as a "Rifleman" and received the Purple Heart for wounds he received in combat. At the end of World War II hostilities, he remained in the Army as a base movie projectionist until his discharge in 1946. In 1947, he married Doris Harrison. He graduated as a machinist from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School and went on to serve for 44 years as machinist, machine planner, and liaison with a major contractor before his retirement from the shipyard. He was a member of Hilton Christian Church. Marion was preceded in death by his parents, Willie J. and Beatrice Ensley Rawls; his sister Inez Karnowski (and husband Ed); his brother John (and wife Jeanne); and his grandson Richard Gordon Rawls. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris Harrison Rawls; two sons: Loyd (and wife JoAnne) of Newport News and Larry (and wife Tricia) of Okinawa; one daughter: Marcia Willis (and husband Sam) of Tallahassee, Florida; four grandsons: Gordon Scott Rawls (and wife Amy) of Midlothian, VA, Thomas Marion Rawls (and wife Cara) of Midlothian, VA, William Harrison Rawls (and wife Lisa) of Falls Church, VA, and Matthew Shaffer Rawls of Okinawa; five great-grandchildren: Kathleen Emma Rawls, Ian Thomas Rawls, Henry Nathaniel Rawls, Emma Nicole Rawls, , and Laura JoAnn Rawls; and one sister: Dorothy Mallard (and husband Ed.) Visitation will be at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 27th, 2013 from 10 - 11:00 AM. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM at the funeral home with burial following at Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk at 2:15 PM. Rev. Thomas Rawls, Associate Pastor of Tomahawk Baptist Church in Midlothian, VA and grandson of the deceased, will conduct the funeral and graveside services.
