NEWPORT NEWS - John L. Hodges, 74, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Riverside Regional Medical Center. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, he had made his home on the Peninsula since 1979. He was a helicopter maintenance instructor at Ft. Eustis and retired from the U.S. Army as a Sergeant First Class in 1981 after 22 years of honorable service. He served three tours in Vietnam. Following his retirement from the Army, he went on to retire from NADEP in Norfolk in 1996 after 15 years of service. John was a member of St. Jerome Catholic church where he also volunteered when needed. He also loved to volunteer for playing Bingo at the Gardens at Warwick Forest. He loved the outdoors and especially gardening and growing vegetables. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister, all of Alabama, and a step-son, Steven Frankie, of Newport News. He is survived by his loving wife, Annette Hodges, of Newport News; two sons, John L. Hodges and wife, Edie, of Dotham, AL, and James Hodges of Huntsville, AL; five brothers, two sisters, two step-sons, one step-daughter, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m., Monday, September 9, 2013 at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral Mass followed by Full Military Honors will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at St. Jerome Catholic Church by the Rev. Henry Diesta. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Columbarium Building Fund, St. Jerome Catholic Church, 116 Denbigh Blvd., Newport News, VA 23608.
