Glenn W. McGaffic Obituary
WILLIAMSBURG - Glenn W. McGaffic, age 89, of Williamsburg, died on 15 November 2013, after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his three children, Glenn W. McGaffic, Jr. and wife Sharon of Simpsonville, SC, Carol Alfter and husband Frank of Beavercreek, OH, and Charles P. McGaffic and wife Wanda of Mechanicsville, VA. His loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy J. McGaffic, preceded him in death in 2006. He is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. They were a military family and lived in several states, the territory of Hawaii, and France. He was the calming factor in all of those moves and could be counted on to provide the best for his family no matter where they were or what the circumstances were. He was born 21 August 1924, in Rochester, PA and entered the US Army Air Force on 23 June 1943. He was trained in airborne radar maintenance and, as such, earned his wings in 1952, and flew many types of aircraft from the C-82 Packet, the C-133 Cargomaster, the C-124 Globemaster, and the C-130 Hercules over the 23 years he was on active duty with the Air Force. He returned from Vietnam in 1968 and was assigned to Langley Air Force Base where retired in 1970. He had been a veteran of three wars, the last being Vietnam, and achieved the rank of Senior Master Sergeant before retiring. Following his distinguished Air Force career, he began a civil service career in missile guidance systems for the US Navy at Yorktown Naval Weapons Station and finished as a ground radar maintenance technician for the US Army at Fort Eustis. His many contributions to the defense of this nation have not gone unnoticed. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, 22 November, at the funeral home. A military burial will be in Williamsburg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fisher House Foundation, at Fisher House Foundation, Inc., 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20805-5168.
