NEWPORT NEWS - Henry Edward "Ed" Wallace, 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 23, 2013 surrounded by his family. Born June, 17, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the only child of William Harvey and Ida Belle Wallace. He had been a Peninsula resident since 1945. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Major after 24 years of combined active and reserve service. He served during World War II as a co-pilot on the B-17 Bomber. On his 15th Berlin bombing mission he was shot down and spent the next 14 months in a POW camp. Following his military service, he went on to retire as a Service Manager from Remington Rand Typewriters. In his later years, he joined the staff of Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News and Amory Funeral Home in Grafton. Major Wallace was a member of the American Ex-POW, and the Past Commander of the James L. Hale Memorial POW Chapter. He was also a member of Parkview Baptist Church. "Ed" is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mable Irene Wallace of Newport News; his two sons, William E. "Bill" Wallace (Joan), and Bobby G. Wallace (Nancy), both of Gloucester; and his granddaughter, Katy Wallace, also of Gloucester. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Newport News Nursing and Rehabilitation for all their kind and loving care during his stay there. A funeral service with Full Military Honors will be held at 12, noon on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at the Weymouth Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Rusty Beck. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Parkview Baptist Church Building Fund, 604 Hilton Blvd., Newport News, VA 23605. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
