HAMPTON - Gregory LaVon Combs, of Hampton, VA entered into eternal rest on December 31, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A native of Newport News, VA, he was born June 5, 1952 to Deacon Shirley Earl Combs, Sr. and Mildred Mansfield Combs. His paternal grandparents were Charles and Elnora Combs and maternal grandmother, Katie Mae Jackson. Greg grew up in Newport News, VA and in his youth he, along with his family, was an active member of New Emmanuel Baptist Church in Newport News. Greg attended Newport News Public Schools and graduated from Carver High School in 1970. After high school, he enlisted in the Army and served as a military policeman stationed in Mannheim, Germany. He received an honorable discharge for military service and returned to Newport News, VA. where he began his civil service career as a budget analyst at Headquarters Commandant at Fort Monroe, VA. He furthered his education by taking courses at Thomas Nelson Community College. He was a graduate of The Syracuse University Comptroller's Course in Syracuse, NY. He culminated his civil service career as budget analyst with The Army Training and Support Center at Joint Base Andrews-Eustis after 39 years of distinguished service. Gregory LaVon Combs is survived by a rich legacy of loving family members, Adrienne Melvin-Combs; children, Horace Combs-Henry and Shirley LaVonne Combs-Nightingale, (Nelo); grandchildren, Gregory DeShon Combs and Christian Combs; sister, Deborah Combs Jeans and family - Darrell, Devita and Sammy, Jr. ; brother, Shirley Earl Combs, Jr. (Jean) and family, Tracy, Stacy, Colleen and Keith; and aunt, Florence Young and family; adopted daughters - Amanda and Amira Baker and their families; adopted grandchildren Hannah Jones and Lundon Dunston. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews and many devoted friends and co-workers. A wake will be held (today), Friday, Jan. 3, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, from 6-7p.m. The funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at The Messiah Center, 1421 W. Pembroke Ave., Hampton, VA.
